By Mike RiggsThe number of Americans who died from the coronovirus is nearly 10,000, according to preliminary figures released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
More than 40,000 Americans died from respiratory illness last year, according the agency.
More than 13,000 died from pneumonia and coronaviruses.
The number is expected to rise further, with more than 15,000 new infections, the CDC said.
The United States is on track to have about 2,000 confirmed cases and more than 4,000 deaths from the virus this year, CDC director Dr. Tom Frieden said Thursday.
That means that roughly a quarter of the nation’s population has been exposed to the virus and about 1.8 million people have been infected.

In the U.S., more than 100 coronaviral infections have been confirmed, according a tally by the CDC.
That means more than 20,000 people have died from coronavids since the first case was reported in March.
The CDC has said that at least 11,000 of those deaths were caused by the virus.
